I have done three collaboration shows with my husband, David Hinske. The first was in Memphis, Tennessee in 2004 at Playhouse on the Square. We returned to Memphis in 2021 for another show at Circuit Playhouse (same building, same space). The works ABOVE are the 2021 show.

KO: a kolaboration (Press Release)

After decades of widespread artistic endeavors, Carolyn and David Hinske are presenting only their third ‘ko’laborative exhibition. The two individual artists, both nationally known, have produced art in the other’s company for over forty years but rarely have created a deliberate body of work that engages their artistic communion so forcefully.

For this event, Carolyn is responding with her variable media wearables to paintings David has made over the recent six months. His semi-landscape, semi-abstract paintings are clearly influenced by his former experience in the mountains of northern New Mexico and also by three years of life now in tree-laden Evanston, Illinois. Carolyn’s emotional and physical response to the paintings stretches the technical aspects of her work as she unleashes new ideas from her already broad skillset.

“This project required a different approach from my usual process. To have an entry point via a specific painting makes my effort easier in some ways, but also is complicated in the requirement that what I do in response should add to the dialog. It’s been an interesting challenge to not only appropriately respond, but intentionally advance the viewing experience from the single object look to an ongoing conversation,” Carolyn says.

David, as usual is brief in his comments regarding his art, adds, “What Carolyn has created in answer to my paintings makes them sing better. This collaboration is an insight into our long and loving relationship with each other and with art.”

KO, BELOW, was held at 1100 Florence Gallery in Evanston, Illinois on May 7 - 8, 2022.
